So we went and looked at that rental condo this afternoon. Ian and I both pretty much fell in love with the place. It's not huge, but it's laid out well, and would be enough room for our needs. And it's GORGEOUS. New hardwood floors in the bedrooms and living room, ceramic tile in the kitchen and bathroom. The walls are painted a caramel color... originally they said we could paint but now they're saying we can't. I don't know why. It's bright and airy, and has a reasonable kitchen with more storage space than I have here.

And the balcony. OMG. It's relatively large, comes with furniture (table with umbrella and 4 chairs), we'd be allowed to have a barbecue, and the view is absolutely amazing. We can see probably a 240° view of the city from the balcony, with a little movement. We can see the mountains on the north shore because there's no towers in the way, and off to the left side of the balcony, we can see all the way down to English Bay. We would be able to watch the fireworks FROM OUR BALCONY.

Since starting this entry, I've gotten an email from them, and pending checking our landlord, employer and bank references, it sounds like they want to rent to us. :) I'm not sure I'm liking all these hoops they want us to jump through (ok, maybe I've been spoiled in my previous places... I've never had a reference check or credit check done before when wanting to rent a place), but I think the place is worth it.

Now days, Reference checks AND Credit checks are normal.
Personally I think doing a credit check is bullshit because, in my case, while my creidt sucks ass, I've NEVER been late on rent or missed rent EVER, but if someone based their renting to me on my credit, they'd miss out on a good tenant...
Plus, just because you have GOOD credit, doesn't make you a good person, a good person to rent to, or a godo tenant...
So I think credit checks for rental purposes are pointless and just another invasion of privacy...
That's my 2 cents.
But so you know, you NEVER have to give your social insurance number to a landlord EVER. That is a definite breach of private information...

Well, they've asked for letters from both of our employers just setting out how long we've been working there and how much we make, and letters from the bank stating that we are in good financial standing. So it doesn't sound like they're going to be doing any actual credit checks.

And yeah, I know that I don't have to give them my SIN, and I haven't and won't.

I'm STILL unimpressed with the fact that I even have to move, period, and with how fussy Ian is being though. Argh.

You also do NOT have to give ANY banking information until they rent to you and you sign a lease etc... until then, your banking info is none of their business.
Ok I think I'm done now... :)

Really? Of course, if I don't give it to them, they'll just say they don't want to rent to us. I mean, of course there's tons of other places out there, this one is just gorgeous.
