state of the Karla
Mar. 23rd, 2011 10:42 amSomehow I have *just* realized how long it's been since I've posted. Time to remedy that... how about a State of the Karla post?
Work
I've finished the assignment at JML. Decided I wouldn't want to work there long term unless it was the only thing I was offered, which obviously I wasn't. Oh well. I then did 3 days of temping way the heck out in Crescent Beach, which was a 30 minute drive each way, but against the main flow of traffic so it wasn't that bad. Then I had Friday off, which was taken up with two interviews - ICBC and the Department of Justice. Still waiting to hear from both of them - I don't think the ICBC one will pan out at all, and it was just a 3 months position, so I don't really care. DoJ, on the other hand, went very well and I am hoping to hear from them eventually. They take ages to do anything though.
In the meantime, I got a call back on one of the other interviews I did, with a sole practitioner down in Kitsilano. He offered me a job on a trial basis, because I wasn't working anywhere else at the time and didn't have to give notice anywhere, but I have a good feeling I'll be kept on after this first two weeks is over. It's going really well here. And it turned out that the commute isn't any worse than it was going downtown, I just spend more time on a bus and less on the train.
Ian
Things are good with Ian. There are still issues, of course, but we're working on them, and communication is improving. He's helping around the house more than he used to, and even getting on my case a tiny bit when I don't do enough. That's not a bad thing, because I'm not perfect either. Really, my only complaint these days is his lack of interest in the SCA, but I've been mostly leaving that one alone, hoping that eventually he'll decide "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em".
my health
The usual struggles. My depression is doing pretty well, actually, but I still struggle a little bit from time to time. I have, however, recently started to wonder if I have developed a mild case of PTSD from the events of December. In any case, things are being managed pretty darn well, between my meds and the efforts I'm making to be social and stuff.
Pets
The kitties are good. I decided that Violet didn't really fit her as a name, and re-named her Ember. She's about 7 months old now, and is totally freaking adorable. She and the dog get along great, and she's the snuggliest little thing I've ever seen.
Onyx is continuing to make agonizingly slow progress in getting used to the dog. He is now to the point where he will come out into the rest of the house if he can't see the dog or if he knows the dog is sleeping. Another year or 2 and he might even be able to be in the same room as the dog while the dog is moving around. Hermione is still Hermione. She's my pretty little grumpus. She's 9 1/2 now!
The dog is much less of an annoyance than he was last summer. He's bonded REALLY strongly to both of us, especially me, it seems. The fur issue still drives me crazy at times, but Ian bought a rake and a slicker brush a couple weeks ago, and that is helping a ton. He was able to take out almost all of the excess undercoat that Cody had built up, so there's a lot less fur to shed now.
WoW
I'm playing considerably less these days, and not raiding at all. This is a good thing, and I really don't miss it much at all. I'm far more interested in spending my time on the next 3 categories...
SCA
Because I'm crazy (and we desperately needed one), I'm about to become the next Baronial Exchequer for Lions Gate. I'm also on retinue for the reign of Prince Kheron and Princess Kenna. Provided I'm kept on at this job, I'm looking at being able to go to pretty much every local event from now on, plus a decent amount of events within an hour or so's drive. And I'm really looking forward to outdoor archery season starting again.
Music
I'm FINALLY getting my butt in gear with my music. I've been practicing my harp daily for a few weeks now, and have 1 song ready to perform, and 3 more just about ready. I'm saving one of them (the one that is both harp and singing) to perform at something slightly bigger than a bransle (the local quarterly Friday-night social), but I'm planning to take my harp to the next bransle and play the other 3.
Crafts
I've been doing LOTS of lampworking lately. I've also been fiddling around with a knitting project that is driving me crazy so now I've set it aside for a while. I've just barely
started a naalbinding project, and want to get going on a few other projects soon.
And that's about it!
