So, I spent about 2 hours sitting in the emergency room at Royal Columbian Hospital last night.
I took Cody (that's what we'd decided to name the dog) down after I got home from work yesterday so he could do his business. I always, ALWAYS keep him on the leash when I do this, even though the dog park is an off-leash park. He did what he needed to do, and then was sniffing around, when another woman in the park came walking down with her golden retriever, who was not on a leash. The two dogs did the old butt-sniff, it seemed fine, and then as I was about to lead Cody away to go back to the apartment, they started fighting. I don't know which dog started it, or if it was both at the same time. I did notice that the other dog was male, though I didn't notice if he was neutered or not.
I was so worried that my bigger, stronger dog was going to end up killing the other dog, that I got in there and attempted to break up the fight. I know... REALLY STUPID move. I now know that in that kind of situation, you should do one of two things - either grab the tail or hind legs and left the dog up in a wheelbarrow pose, which makes it hard for them to fight, or wind up and kick them where it counts.
Anyways, I got bitten.
( crappy iPhone photo behind the cut, for the squeamish )
He got me at the base of the nail on my right middle finger, and it's currently swollen, sore, and really icky looking. It's making typing real fun, too. The ER doctor wasn't too worried about it though. I use my hands SO much that I decided to err on the side of caution and go, but it didn't break the bone or sever any blood vessels. I might lose the nail at the very worst, and there will definitely be a hole in the nail as it grows out, but I don't need to worry about losing the finger or anything (whew!). The swelling is starting to go down enough that I can bend the top joint on that finger again.
The fate of the dog is another story which will be saved for a filtered post. For the time being, I'm fine, the dog is fine (it wasn't his fault, not really), painful lesson learned.
