When I moved out of my parents home (which was over on Vancouver Island) and took my first full time job, I was working in an office, and I had fallen into the position through a friend (who then became a roommate for a few months). I took it simply because I had no other prospects at the time and I wanted out of my parents house.
That led to a string of office jobs and temping, but I had a hard time finding anything permanent because of my lack of schooling and my weight. Eventually I went to Human Resources Canada and asked them to put me into some formal training. I had done a stint as a temp at the Department of Justice and enjoyed it there, but as I've since realized, it was mostly because I was happy to be working steady for a while at a good wage, and had a good boss, and not so much the actual work. HRDC said legal assistant was close enough to what I'd been doing, so they'd cover me for it. I wasn't about to turn down a year of schooling where they paid for my tuition, books, AND covered my living expenses while I did it. So that's how I ended up with this career.
I'm a damned good legal assistant, and can do the job with my eyes closed, but it's boring, most lawyers are jerks, and I'm sick of it. Thing is, I don't really want to do anything similar - I'm tired of sitting on my butt all day long. I'd like to find something that will stimulate my brain but also allows me to be a little bit more active. But like I said, I have no idea what yet. No freaking clue.
