long, rambly update on the last 2 weeks
Aug. 10th, 2009 12:43 pmOk, so I promised you all a long post about the move, didn't I?
The day before the move, I picked up the keys, and was handed a whopping huge *manual* for the condo. Seriously, they had photocopied the manual for every appliance, written out all sorts of contact information and even info about the city for people who've never lived here before. Interesting concept. Anyways, after that, I had the key copied for Ian, ran a couple errands and then headed to Ian's place to help him finish packing. "Packing" ended up becoming simply doing his dishes for him so he could pack them, and then cracking the verbal whip at him to keep him moving. I started flipping through the manual at Ian's place, and discovered that we had to call to arrange for internet hookup, despite it being free for the first year... and as a result, we are still without proper internet connection - it's being hooked up on Friday.
We ended up doing one loaded-to-the-rafters run of the more fragile stuff in the co-op car on Friday evening too. It was interesting packing the car with the junkies and hookers looking on (he used to live in Chinatown, which turns into crack central after dark. I'm so glad he's out of that area). When all we had left was his computers and scotch collection, it turned into him making trips and me babysitting the car so the windows didn't get smashed.
The move went pretty darn well, aside from the movers being 3 hours late (which I had fully expected to happen, so it wasn't a surprise). It was SO nice to be able to sit on my butt and watch them pack my shit into the van and then unload it afterwards. We had one heck of a thunder and lightning storm start around 6pm I think, which was amazing to watch from our condo. I wish I'd had my camera handy for it, but it was packed at the time. The movers didn't get finished until after 9pm, so we had time to order a pizza for dinner and eat it, before we collapsed into bed from exhaustion.
I still had the co-op car booked on Sunday, so Sunday ended up being a day of running around like maniacs doing things that were easier with a vehicle, instead of unpacking, but oh well.
All of the week following the move was still during the heatwave, which made unpacking not very pleasant. Still, I managed to get a fair amount done that week. My iPhone arrived on Wednesday (I think it was), so we now have somewhat slow-ish internet access via USB tethering... it's enough for surfing, email and chat, and we can sort of play WoW over it, but it's not enough bandwidth for raiding or doing anything really all that productive. but it's enough to keep the withdrawal shakes away. :)
Our first full weekend in the condo was my sister's visit. She arrived late-afternoon on Friday, and almost immediately said "Ok, what furniture do you need help moving?" She was a godsend... between she and I we got all of the furniture arranged the way Ian and I wanted it, which made it MUCH easier to unpack the rest of the boxes around the furniture. The place is starting to really look awesome, too.
Fortunately by the time she arrived, the weather had started cooling down, which made it way easier for us to go out and do things. We spent Saturday afternoon at Ikea, mostly because she wanted to go but Ian and I got a bunch of stuff we'd wanted for the house as well, and then went and bought a barbecue after that. We spent most of the evening putting the barbecue together, and it took us so long that we ended up ordering chinese takeout for dinner instead of barbecuing anything.
Sunday we decided to bail on the Pride Parade, simply because neither my sister or I felt like standing around for a few hours in the heat. Instead, Ian and I did a bunch of organizing and cleaning in the morning, and then we went and wandered around on Granville Island for the afternoon. We took the Aquabus across the water and walked up to Burrard, and then hit Shabusen for dinner, which was OMGYUM. She headed home on Monday morning and we had one day of weekend to ourselves.
This past week has been absolutely nothing special, other than the barbecue we had last night with Ian's family. That was a ton of fun and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
