OMG!
I have NEWS!
As anyone who is on my Facebook friends list already knows, Ian and I are engaged!
He didn't really propose in the traditional sense of the word. We've talked about it lots in the past. His sisters have been bugging him to propose to me since shortly after we started dating. I've bugged him periodically, and he always balked. But this spring, he stopped balking much at all, and we actually had a few conversations that were downright productive. Ours has always been the type of relationship where everything is debated to death, so it's not like I was ever expecting a surprise down-on-one-knee type of proposal or anything.
Anyhow, after my birthday dinner on April 30th, at which Ian's sisters did the requisite sister teasing, we were at home playing on our computers, and I said to him (in a very teasing manner) "so, whatcha getting me for my birthday?". In the past, I had hinted to him that he was perfectly welcome to make my birthday gift an engagement ring, which he had typically responded with something like "pfft" or similar. When I asked him what he was giving me as a birthday gift, he sat there making noises like he was thinking, and then turned around and went "wanna get married?"
I was, of course, shocked that he would do almost a total 180 turnaround, and almost didn't believe him. Once he assured me that yes, he was serious, I of course said yes! We decided to keep it a secret for a bit, until we got me a ring and stuff. The original plan was to get the ring and tell my parents when we go to visit the weekend of June 10th, and then tell his family, and then announce it to our friends. But because of the insane cost of shipping anything from the US using any other method than regular USPS, the ring wasn't going to arrive until after our trip to see my family. So we decided to tell people anyways. We went out for dinner with Ian's mom last night, and told her then, and then when we got home, I called my parents and told them, after which we changed our Facebook statuses which told most of our friends. :)
My mom called just over an hour ago to ask if she could tell my grandparents and aunt and uncle, because they were all going to be arriving shortly for a visit, and I told her to call me when they got there so I could tell my grandma myself. Funnily enough, 2 minutes later, my mom's doorbell rang and they all arrived! So then I got to tell my grandma, who was all excited and happy, and then my aunt, who almost hyperventilated on the phone.
( the ring... )
We're planning on a long engagement for two reasons: we're very likely going to be paying for the entire thing ourselves, and I'm going to use this as a deadline for myself to get some of this extra weight off. We're looking at likely fall of 2012 or spring of 2013.
