gardening question

A quick question for my f-list, and a quick answer would be awesome since Ian and I are going to look at apartments in an hour and a half.

If you were moving into an apartment with a balcony, and wanted to plant a container garden on said balcony, and had a choice of which way your balcony faced... which way would you want the balcony to face? I want to plant mostly herbs and maybe a few easy to care for flowers and veggies.

I'd say you'd want it to face east for some morning sun. Afternoon sun can be really harsh.

I'd say east or south. I live in a north-facing apartment and get hardly any sun at all.

I face southwest and my roses, woad, hens'n'chicks, lavender, tomato, and ivy plants love the afternoon sun.
Mostly think about whether you like sunrises or sunsets. Face east for sunrise and west for sunset. I hate mornings so I am really glad not to face east.
